JUNIOR ERGO CHALLENGE

Junior Ergo Challenge 2009  - Results Available

In March, Canoe England travelled to Battersea Park, London to launch the Junior Ergo Challenge 2009. The event was a great success, with almost 500 young people taking part in the time trials.

The challenge attracted pupils from year 7 up to year 13, with an outstanding number of young people taking part from the younger years - 110 participants from year 7 and 84 from year 8. For both girls and boys this was their first attempt at canoeing but many enjoyed it so much they returned for more action on the ergo's throughout the day!

Nottingham's Emma Lindley (Year 12) clocked the quickest time for the girls of 1:01.66 while 63 girls in total clocked under the guideline National Regatta standard of 1:20.00 including Georgia Smith (1:02.61, year 10) also from Nottingham and Camden's Sophia Parvizi-Wayne (1:06.50, year 7).

The boys were also keen to impress with 30 clocking under the one minute mark and 102 paddling under the guideline National Regatta standard of 1:14.00. Slalom paddler George Durden (year 10), from London Nautical, led the way after clocking 45.41 seconds while Matt Robinson (year 11, Llantwit) was hot on his tail with 47.60 seconds.

Results from the challenge will assist Canoe England in producing a talent identification programme and further Junior Ergo Challenges are being planned for the future with the potential of developing an English Championships.
