Surrey’s athletes produce medal flurry at the Marathon World Championships

GB’s marathon racing athletes, most of whom are from Surrey, competed in the Canoe Marathon World Championships in Crestuma, Portugal over the weekend. Racing in the senior Men’s K1 (Kayak Single) class over a distance of 30Km, the 2009 GB National Champion and former World Junior Champion, 23 year old Ben Brown, (Elmbridge Canoe Club) won a Silver medal in the K1 Men event.
Tom Daniels, was GB’s sole representative in the Under 23 Men’s K1 class, he won a Bronze medal in a time of 1.54.29. In the Senior Women’s K1 class, raced over a distance of 26 kilometres Lani Belcher (Elmbridge CC) won a Bronze medal in a time of 1.58.52 just 1 seconds off the winner Portugal’s Beatriz Gomes (1.58.41).
In the Women’s Under 23 K1 class, former World Junior Champion Louisa Sawers 21 (also Elmbridge CC) won a Silver medal in the K1 Women Under 23 class in a time of 1.40.08.
In the Men’s K1 Junior class, the 2009 Junior National Champion, Mark Childerstone from Wey Kayak Club, Guildford, achieved 12th position and Dean Terry won a Silver medal in a time of 1.38.01.
Thirty countries and over 400 athletes competed in the races which took places 18 - 20 September.
