The ten English regions represent the interests of ALL aspects of canoeing in their local area.
The members are all volunteers and are keen to help all paddlers in any way possible.
The volunteers encourage clubs, (and also themselves) to organise a variety of events, competitions and coaching courses for both the newcomers and more experienced paddlers aimed at expanding the sport of canoeing and encouraging membership of the BCU. They develop and manage local facilities of national importance e.g. Washburn, Cardington, and even buy land to enable Access to important rivers.
They provide a local forum for debate, both of policy and action, sending a representative (usually the chair) to the English Development Team (EDT) meetings (formerly NDT) who are responsible for the promotion of canoeing in England, and represents the interests of the English paddler on the Federal Committee (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), the BCU Council and the Commonwealth Canoeing Federation. They represent the interest of canoeists to third parties such as the Sports Council, Sports Aid Foundation, and Environment Agency, sitting on a wide variety of consultative committees.
BCU members are automatically members of the region for the address they give on their membership application or renewal form. Members may elect to be members of another region instead by indicating this on their membership form. Regional Annual Consultative Meetings are held during November and December. All affiliated clubs in each region will receive notices and agendas. Individual BCU members requiring the same information should send two stamped, addressed envelopes, marked "ACM" to their regional secretary.
For information on access to water, please visit the access pages of this website or contact the appropriate Local or Regional Access Officer (see regional and river access pages).
English Regions Contacts
There is plenty of local BCU canoeing promoted by the ten English BCU regional committees.
Secretaries or contacts are listed below.
If you are a canoeist, these regional officers can help you with information or put you in touch with other local canoeing experts.
The regional committees promote canoeing in partnership with many other organisations. If you represent an organisation not yet in touch with the BCU locally, then this list will help you to make contact.
Use the links on the left to view details of other regional contacts.
