Criminal Records Bureau and Independent Safeguarding Authority

Updated July 1st 2010

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks enable organisations that provide opportunities or services for children and vulnerable adults to access relevant information to assist in recruitment decisions. The BCU is a Registered Body with the CRB and is able to administer checks on behalf of our affiliated organisations, coaches, volunteers and staff.

From July 1st 2010 there is a new form to complete for CRB checks. We have therefore updated our guidance to support anyone applying or seeking guidance on the process. For further information relating to applying for a CRB disclosure refer to the following documents:
Criminal Records Bureau Frequently asked Questions (G17)
Criminal Records Bureau Application Guidance (G18)
Designated Identity Evidence Checkers (G19)

Portability of Previous Checks
The BCU is not able to accept CRB Disclosure certificates from other organisations. This is on the guidance of the Criminal Records Bureau, who have ceased to offer a “Portability” service.

Vetting and Barring Scheme - update 15th June
The Government has announced that the Vetting and Barring scheme has been put on hold pending a full review. The new registration process was due to commence in July 2010. As soon as we receive further information this will be posted on the website. In the meantime, organisations and individuals should continue with the CRB disclosures and screening processes.

Although the Scheme is halted whilst the Government undertakes its review, new safeguarding regulations introduced in October 2009 continue to apply. These include:

+ A person who is barred from working with children or vulnerable adults will be breaking the law if they work or volunteer, or try to work or volunteer with those groups.
+ An organisation which knowingly employs someone who is barred to work with those groups will also be breaking the law.
+ If your organisation works with children or vulnerable adults and you dismiss a member of staff or a volunteer because they have harmed a child or vulnerable adult, or you would have done so if they had not left, you must tell the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
