SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTING CHILDREN: TRAINING

The standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport require that individuals involved with children or with responsibilities in our sport undertake Child Protection training.  The following table outlines what those requirements are.

Training and Disclosure Requirements Table updated August 2013
(For volunteers, coaches and staff who do not work regularly* or alone with children- see the table above to confirm which course(s) you need to complete)

The minimum requirement is a basic awareness course which can be accessed through a distance learning scheme or web based learning.  This course is suitable for volunteers, coaches and staff involved in Paddlesport who are not working regularly* or alone with children. Please read the table above to see if this is the right course for you.

Canoe England Online Paddlesafe Course
The BCU introduced the Online Paddlesafe Course to support individuals to meet this requirement and reduce the cost involved.  If you are a member of Canoe England (or other Home Nation) you will need your membership number to access the reduced fee course of £7.99.  For non members the cost is £16.99. (Other courses may be accepted as equivalent training)

This course covers basic awareness training, explains best practice, and what to do if you have a concern regarding child protection.  There are five sections – with questions at the end of each section.  If you do not pass all the questions you will be directed back to the knowledge section to reinforce the key learning points. The course takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. On successful completion of the course there is a certificate for you to download and keep.

*coaches who work regularly or alone with children should attend the Basic Safeguarding workshop detailed below in section 2. Regularly can be defined by a set pattern, for example: once a week or once every two months.

2. Basic Safeguarding Workshops
(For volunteers, coaches and staff who do work regularly* or alone with children- see the table above to confirm which course(s) you need to complete)

All coaches and volunteers, paid or unpaid, who work regularly* or alone with children and young people, and those with designated roles in relation to children such as Club Welfare Officers should attend a recognised Safeguarding workshop or course – with a minimum of 2 hours direct delivery.   The most popular and widely delivered workshop is the Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport course (SPC). You can search for a course in your area using the workshop finder tool at Sports Coach UK. This course can also be accessed through your local County Sport Partnership. The cost of the course is approximately £20-£25 per person, (prices will vary depending on the provider). Please note that SCUK can take up to 6 weeks to send you the certificate of attendance.

You may have already attended a Safeguarding course through your work place or local authority.  Whilst this is not usually specific to sport it may be recognised as equivalent to the SPC course.  Please see the Equivalent Training Guidance (G14) more information and what to do if you feel you have attended an equivalent course.
