Jon Schofield, Coached to Perform: Why coaching has been critical in life and paddling carrier
Saturday 24th November at 09.30 hrs
Following a start in the sport through a cub-scout racing league and being spotted by a local racer, Jon has progressed through very successfully. He started in Wildwater Racing where he worked under several coaches, winning a series of international titles.
In 2007 he switched to Sprint and saw success with Ben Brown in the K2 500m But 9th place at the World’s was not enough to qualify for the 2008 Games.
Programme changes saw 200m Racing introduced as an Olympic event. The shorter distances always suited Jon, so the decision to change distances was not difficult. After a winter under the guidance of Alex Nikonorov, Jon paired with Liam Heath winning National Selection in a record time. This new career high for them also saw them qualify for the 2012 Olympics and take Bronze at the London 2012 Games: a dream come true, especially contributing to a record medal haul for team GB.  Find out more
Anna Hemmings MBE, Overcoming Barriers
Saturday 24th November at 16.00 hrs
Anna Hemmings MBE is best known as Britain’s most successful ever female canoeist; a two time Olympian and 6 times World Champion.  However, in April 2009 after 15 years at the highest level of the sport Anna decided to retire from professional sport.  She is the Director and co-founder of Beyond the Barriers, a company which is dedicated to improving the health, performance and resilience of individuals in both the sporting and business environments.
In addition to this Anna has built a reputation as world class speaker, inspiring audiences with anecdotes from the World Championship and Olympic Games, hers is really tale of triumph over adversity... In April 2003 Anna was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and she was told by medical experts she might never race again. But despite being told that there was no solution, Anna’s ‘never give up’ attitude enabled her to make a full recovery. Between 2005 and 2007 she went on to win a hat-trick of three world titles in a row and to become an Olympian for the second time competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Anna has a staggering eleven World and European Championship medals. Her achievements were recognized at the Sunday Times Sports Woman of the Year Awards, where she won the 2005 Champions Award and then again in 2007 when she was voted BBC London Sports Personality of the Year.  She was then awarded an MBE in the 2010 New Year’s honours list for her services to sport.  Find out more
