3 Star Freestyle Assessor Requirements

The BCU has recently released the 3 Star Freestyle award so Canoe England is now looking to identify assessors of this award.

Assessor
Requirements:

Phase 1:  
Phase 1 is designed to get the first wave of assessors able to run the award. Coaches who meet all of the following requirements will be eligible to register with the Home Nation as a BCU 3 Star Freestyle Assessors:

1. Updated BCU Coach, with one of the following qualifications:
  • ‘old’ Level 3 Inland Kayak Coach  
  • BCU MWE White Water Coach
  • BCU (UKCC) Level 3 White Water Coach 

2. Registered BCU 3 Star Assessor in another discipline 

3. Course Authorisation Number from a 3 Star Assessment Run  

4. Up-to-date (within 3 years) knowledge of the technical content of the 3 Star Freestyle Syllabus  (Evidenced via application to Home Nation; applications reviewed by Freestyle tech panel)  

5. Successful completion of assessor orientation
     a.Orientation could either be the attendance of a specific BCU Orientation event, or by working alongside  a HN          Orientation Trainer running a BCU 3 Star Freestyle Assessment  
     b.During orientation potential assessors are required to demonstrate that they have:
        i) an accurate knowledge of the assessment standard in all aspects of the syllabus
        ii) the technical knowledge/understanding to coach candidates in all aspects of the syllabus
        iii) the ability to apply the principles of the BCU 7-Steps to assessment within their assessment practice  

Please note, to proceed with the application process, you will need to be an updated coach. There are five things you need to have to meet the update requirements:
  1. Hold Full Comprehensive Membership of Canoe England
  2. Have a valid first aid certificate recorded on your Canoe England membership record
  3. Have completed the relevant Child Protection and Awareness requirements (further information available here)
  4. Have up-to-date BCU CRB enhanced disclosure (further information available here)
  5. Be up-to-date with current best practice (further information available here)

Application Process:

If you wish to apply to become a 3 Star Freestyle Assessor please complete the attached ‘3 Star Freestyle Assessor Application Form’. Please ensure all information asked for is entered. If you are unsure of the authorisation number or date of a 3 Star you have run please contact our Customer Service team on 0845 3709500 or [email protected] who will be able to help you with this information. Only the information contained in your application will be considered so please ensure you include as much information as possible, relating it to the different parts of the syllabus, along with supporting documents if appropriate. Please ensure you refer to the 3 Star Freestyle syllabus so relevant information and evidence is included.

Please ensure any handwritten applications are legible; it is preferable that applications are typed.

Assessor Orientation days will be organised once Canoe England is aware of how many potential providers there may be. Therefore we ask that if you are keen to apply to be a 3 Star Freestyle Assessor please complete and return your application form by 9th July 2012 so we can look to plan the assessor orientation appropriately for the first round of applicants.
