British Canoeing Commercial Communications and Membership Revamp

British Canoeing is revamping its behind-the-scenes operation to boost performance in commercial, communications and membership relations.

It aims to build on the comprehensive restructuring of its organisation, which has included a rebranding under the new British Canoeing logo over the last twelve months, a streamlining of its social media presence and the rollout of a new website (www.britishcanoeing.org.uk) which is currently in progress.

While the British Canoeing branding was put in place last year, the organisation continues in its aim of representing its 35,000 members. It’s also responsible for the functions previously carried out by Canoe England, across a range of activities including coaching, boosting participation and raising standards in the sport. This complements the work of the Scottish Canoe Association, Canoe Wales and the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland.

British Canoeing is also responsible for the high performance programme, which has achieved significant success at World Championship and Olympic level in recent years.

Three key appointments have been made to meet the organisation’s key strategic objectives.  Commercial Manager Mark Taffler has been brought in to develop new partnerships across the sport from the grassroots, up to elite Olympic level.

“I am really excited to have joined British Canoeing,” he said on appointment. “It is a fantastic sport, with a hugely engaged audience.”

“We are the largest participation watersport in the country and I want to know more about the 1.5 million people who go canoeing a year. Those that actively take part in their passions are 6 times more likely to engage with a brand partner and that is commercially very attractive to potential partners.”

Membership Manager Sam Rankin is aiming to develop a range of services, alongside the unrivalled coaching, insurance and training schemes British Canoeing already provides to its 35,000 members.

“British Canoeing members come from all disciplines across both recreational and competition,” Sam said. “My role is to make sure membership is relevant to everyone; whether they are a long-standing member or new to the sport. We want to offer great value benefits and services to reward our current members and attract new members.”

New Communications Manager Chris Egerton brings a background of 15 years journalism with Sky and the BBC to British Canoeing, following a previous spell with British Basketball.

“British Canoeing represents a sport which has so much to offer and it’s the job of the communications team to promote its benefits and the opportunities within it, which paddlers of all ages can enjoy,” he said.

“Our job is to explain the role and actions of British Canoeing but also listen to our members and celebrate the success of our elite athletes in any way we can.”
