WATERWAYS AND ENVIRONMENT

The former Access and Environment Department became The Waterways and Environment in July 2011 because of the changing nature of the roles and responsibilities it has. Waterways and Environment’ better describes the wide range of activities that the team engages with, extending into regulation, legislation, liaison with agencies, navigation authorities and other organisations; plus the growing area of environmental management.

Access to and along water remains a challenging issue with the team providing support and advice to colleagues in other departments, members and other organisations, assisted by the Waterway Advisors. Existing access arrangements have been maintained and efforts to gain access and resolve difficulties have included both inland and coastal waters.

We work with our Regional and Local Waterways Advisors who have an essential role in providing local knowledge on canoeing activity to both full time CE staff and CE members.

What do we get involved in? There are a multitude of things related to the waterways both inland and coastal which we are required to be involved in to both support the access issue and to develop relationships with external organisations with whom we wish to promote and develop canoeing in England.

We encourage paddlers to enjoy water responsibly in ways that are compatible with the conservation of the environment and wildlife.
